Summary

In 1857, this specimen was thought to be the last Gould's Mouse, a species presumed extinct. In 2021, scientists from the Museums Victoria Research Institute extracted genetic information from this specimen and confirmed that native mice on an island off Western Australia belong to this same species, showing that Gould's Mouse is not extinct. However, this small remaining population has low genetic diversity.
