Summary
This specimen was collected on the 2017 'Sampling the Abyss' voyage from ~2800 metres deep in the Freycinet Marine Park (previously CMR - Commonwealth Marine Reserve) off Eastern Tasmania. Unlike typical marine isopods that can look like a backyard 'slater' (or pill bug), these strange looking isopods from the family Antarcturidae are covered in spines - presumably for protection - and have hairs on their arms to assist with filtering food from the water column.
