Summary

These specimens were collected off Bermagui, New South Wales during the 2017 'Sampling the Abyss' expedition. Like many deep-sea animals, Nematocarcinus sigmoideus are bright red in life, but the preservation process causes specimens to lose their colour. However, these shrimp were found lodged inside a discarded paint can on the sea floor, and the red paint can still be seen coating them.
