Pendle Hall Dolls' House - Room 6 Kitchen

The kitchen is one of 21 rooms in the dolls' house Pendle Hall. It was designed and decorated by Felicity Clemons over a forty year period, and each piece of furniture and fixture was handmade by her. She used books and magazines for inspiration, and to achieve a high level of accuracy in the design and execution of each item.

It is a large room in the basement of the house, directly below the dining room and the entrance hall, which was used to prepare meals for the household.

A long light wooden table, with three drawers, sits in the centre of the room. On it sits a number of food dishes, including a plum pudding, a pie, a dressed ham and a pair of chickens.

On the left hand wall is a dark wooden dresser, with three racks containing a number of china decorated dinner plates. On the front shelf are three large desserts.

On the right hand wall is a large light wooden table, with a number of wood cooking utensils on top, including a pastry board, a rolling pin, and a salt cellar. Next to it is a dark wooden low chair, with a container below the seat, on which sits a small cat.

On the left back wall is a wooden carved food safe, with turned legs and a small front door. On top of the safe are five jars and a candlestick. On the right back wall is a light wooden corner bench fitted with a sink and three drawers. On it are a large copper pan and a box of metal cutlery, whilst below sits a large metal pot and a green and white hanging dish cloth. Above the bench hangs a wooden plate rack containing a number of white china decorated dinner plates. Next to it hang three metal food covers.

In the centre of the back wall is a large open fire place containing a large black metal range, with an oven on either side. The left hand one is open, revealing a cooked turkey. A fire is burning in the centre of the range. On top of it sits three copper pans, a black metal pan and a cooper kettle, while two black pots sit on a warming rack above, which is cut in the middle by a large metal vent. Around the fire place is a high wooden mantle, on which sits five cooper jelly moulds, and six pottery jars. A long case clock hangs on the wall above it.

On either side of the back wall is a long sash window, with a pair of green and white checked curtains. A garden view can be seen through both windows. A four armed light fitting hangs from a ceiling beam in the centre of the room. There are two doors; one on the back left hand wall, leading to the servant's hallways, and one of the front right hand wall, leading to the pantry.

Two servants are in the kitchen; Mrs Proudfoot, the cook, is working at the large table, while Mr Proudfoot, the butler, is opening the left hand door.
