Summary
The first model of the Toy Duck from the Opening Ceremony of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games was a miniature, sent by the Workshop to the Director of the Ceremony, Andrew Walsh, in mid-2005. These wings were cut from the same pattern, but were not used. They are, along with the pattern reverse from that model duck, a link to the earliest stage of the prototyping of the duck. See MM 89792 for sketch of the Toy Duck, HT11974 for the final duck and HT 12550 for the pattern reverse.
Museum staff were in the Ceremonies office on the day that the model arrived, and saw the excitement of the design staff, as they saw the first of their designs become a physical object. These wings were made by Ceremonies workshop from a design by Christina Smith.
Physical Description
White polyeurethane foam, cut in the shape of a pair of duck's wings.
