Slide showing a set of three Latvian costume brooches made by Latvian jeweler Maris Purens. Maris is a well known jeweler within the Melbourne Latvian community. Brooches or pins are the most common item of jewellery worn with traditional Latvian costumes. They are used to fasten the neck opening of a shirt, or to keep a shawl in place. They are usually made in silver and may be ornamented with different coloured stones or glass beads. Traditionally the more jewellery that is worn with a folk costume, the wealthier the owner.
