Summary
Copy of a medal with an imaginary portrait of Queen Dido of Carthage. The original medal, by Alessandro Casati, was made in the mid 16th century. This Electrotype copy made circa 1881 at the British Museum by Robert Ready. The original medal was probably BMC Reg. M.149.
It is thought that this electrotype was produced in association with an exhibition of medals in the King's Library in 1881 and was acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria where it was displayed probably in the late 1880s.This two piece electrotype is copper plated and toned. The original was a cast bronze two sided medal in the British Museum collection (perhaps Reg. M.149).

Bust of Dido facing right wearing antique drapery, and braided hair adorned with a fillet and a wreath; around, a legend in Greek (Dido Queen)
Reverse Description
Ancient walled Carthage, with three galleys in the foreground (the name of the city in Greek near the edge at the top left is unclear)
