Summary
Copy of a medal with a portrait of Charles IX of France. The original medal, by an unknown artist, was made in the 16th century. This Electrotype copy made circa 1881 by Robert Ready. The original medal was probably BMC Reg. M.2197.
It is thought that this electrotype was produced in association with an exhibition of medals in the King's Library in 1881 and was acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria where it was displayed probably in the late 1880s.This two piece electrotype is copper plated and toned. The original was probably a struck silver medal from the British Museum collection (Reg. M.2197)

Laureate bust of Charles IX facing right, wearing armour and a sash; around, CAROLVS . IX . D . G . FRANCOR . REX .
Reverse Description
Minerva treads on a bow and lifts the pillars of Hercules; about her feet, a quiver and two laurel branches; around, MAIOR . ERIT . HERCULE . (translation: He will be greater than Hercules)
