Summary
Badge, alternatively known as a button, referencing the difficulties which have been experienced by Australia and New Zealand in their connection to the ANZUS treaty.
The Australia, New Zealand and the United States treaty was signed in 1951 as a response to both the collaboration which the three countries had partaken of during World War II and the Cold War situation postwar. New Zealand had increasing problems with its role in the Treaty during the 1980s when it refused to allow American warships to dock in its ports.
In 1984, New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange barred nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed ships from New Zealand's harbours. New Zealand was gradually sidelined from the Treaty as result. Today, Australia and the United States maintain their formal relationship according to the ANZUS Treaty but a new treaty relationship is being brokered with New Zealand.
