Summary
Alternative Name(s): Button
This badge was manufactured in Fitzroy by A.W.Patrick in the mid 1960s. It was acquired by Michael Hamel-Green during his period of draft resistance between 1965 and 1972. He was one of the initiators and core members of the Students for a Democratic Society, founded at University of Melbourne in 1968. One of the key causes the organisation dealt with was encouraging young men not to register for conscription and they even proclaimed their headquarters a safe heaven for resisters hiding from the police. Moreover, in a 1969 essay, the donor confessed that it was Compulsory National Service that made him renounce a disinterested attitude in favour of activism. This badge is therefore significant as a material reminder of his experience as an anti-war campaigner.
