The object was probably produced by Students for a Democratic Society at Monash University. The slogan 'Serve the People' originated from a speech by Mao Zedong in 1944 and became one of the core principles of the Chinese Communist Party. In the 60s and 70s, it was widely adopted by socialist organisations all over the world.
