Summary
Alternative Name(s): Button
Made: circa 1968 - 1970 and used in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, circa 1968 - 1973. Worn by donor during anti-Vietnam war and anti-conscription rallies. Donor was a student at Monash University between 1968 and 1973, and was involved in student politics, including membership of the militant Students for a Democratic Society. The badge was probably produced by the society. The phrase 'Make Love not War' is one of the quintessential messages of the American counterculture movement of the 1960s. It ties in with the ideology of free love, the libertarian philosophy opposing establishment constraints and marriage as well as encouraging an exploration of sexuality.
