Circular badge produced circa 1980 with the slogan 'No draft! No War!' donated by University of Melbourne student Bill Watson. The slogan 'We Won't Die for Exxon' stems from protests against the situation which came to be known as the Carter Doctrine. In January 1980 Jimmy Carter, the president of the U.S. made a State of the Union address announcing that the United States were prepared to use force to defend their national interests in the Persian Gulf. He also introduced draft registration for the first time since the Vietnam War. The Gulf's rich oil supplies were naturally also one of the main aspects of this development. Hence, protestors did not only resist the draft but also came up with slogans to express their sentiment that an impending war would mainly benefit oil corporations.
