Summary

Coherer detector, used by Henry Walter Jenvey for the first Australian shore-to-ship radio communication with H.M.S. 'St. George' during the Federation celebratrions in May 1901.

A later feature of telegraph networks was the use of wireless technology, which included mobile communication. This coherer is believed to have been used by H.W. Jenvey, Electrical Engineer for the Postmaster General's Department of Victoria, when he sent the first experimental shore-to-shop radio message in Australia, welcoming the Duke and Duchess of York on their arrival in Port Phillip Bay for an to the celebrations for the Offical Openning of the of Federation. The shore-based wireless station was specifically built for the purpose by H.W. Jenvey, Electrical Engineer for the Postmaster General's Department of Victoria. Jenvey also constructed the coherer, which was an essential part of the wireless telegraphy equipment. Jenvey made the coherer in the workshops of the Victorian Post Office.
