World War I Lieutenant Commander's naval uniform, formerly belonging to Charles Davy Matheson. Includes jacket and trousers; great coat; 4 sets of epaulets; 1 hat band; 7 Australian Commonwealth buttons; 2 pearl buttons; 3 RNR naval buttons; and 3 Aberdeen buttons.
Charles Davy Matheson joined the Royal Naval Reserve in 1915, having previously served for also 20 years in the Merchant Navy with the Aberdeen white star line. He commanded the H.M.A.S.'Mourilyan' patrolling Queensland coastal waters and was the pilot for Admiral Jellicoe on the 1919 reconnaissance of the Timor Strait. He later received a naval tribute for this work.
