Part of the prototype airborne ARL Flight Memory Recorder. This jettisonable slab contained a radio beacon and was part of the crash module. It was designed to be released in the event of a crash and provide a homing radio beacon for searchers.
This invention subsequently became colloquially known as the 'black box flight recorder'.
