Summary
Earth arrestor allows the transmitter and receiver to share the same aerial, limits the amount of transmitter power entering the receiver.
The top plate of the arrestor is clamped to a stud fixed in the centre of the bottom plate but insulated from it by an ebonite bush. The plates are separated by mica discs distance generally .01". The wire going to the ship's earth is connected to the bottom plate and that going to the earth terminal of the oscillation transformer to the top. When transmitting, the top plate sparks onto the bottom plate and connects to earth. When not transmitting the top plate remains insulated and the receiver is connected to this.
