Significance

A coin called a pagoda made legal tender in New South Wales in November 1800 after a Proclamation by Governor King with its value in the Colony set at eight shillings. That pagoda however was the Madras pagoda of the type then in production with either granulated or star reverse, a product of the British East India Company. This coin should not be considered as part of the Australian Proclamation series.
