Summary

Badge, alternatively known as a button, referencing the difficulties which have been experienced by Australia and New Zealand with their involvement in the 'Australian, New Zealand, United States' (ANZUS) treaty. The ANZUS treaty was signed in 1951 during the Cold War. New Zealand's signatory to the treaty was strained in the 1980s when it refused to allow American warships to dock in its ports. In 1984, New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange barred nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed ships from New Zealand's harbours. New Zealand was gradually sidelined from the Treaty as result. Today, Australia and the United States maintain their formal relationship according to the ANZUS Treaty but a new treaty relationship is being brokered with New Zealand.
