Summary

Round badge with the slogan 'Make Australia Nuclear Free', circa 1960s-1980s. This is one of a series of badges and peace movement posters acquired by the museum following the exhibition 'Peace: an Exhibition' which explored the Peace movement and was part of the Victorian Government contribution to International Year of Peace in 1986.

In the period around 1960s-1980s, many organisations were pushing to have Australia declared a Nuclear-Free zone. The Treaty of Rarotonga, or the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty was signed in 1986, with Australia as an initiator. It bans the use, testing, and possession of nuclear weapons within the borders of the area.
