Summary
One of six trial lenses made for Charlwood Design during the process of manufacturing the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton. The top rear section of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton is an opaque gold-coloured lens. It's function is to look shiny, while concealing a series of LED's that flash to make a 'lightning' effect, and a web camera.
Six trial lenses were made to achieve the effect that Charlwood Design wanted. Some early versions, like this one, scratched too easily, which is unsuitable for an object that was intended to be handled as much as the Baton. Others were insufficiently consistent in the finish, giving a rainbow patina, rather than a smooth gold finish.
Like many other objects in this Collection, this lens reflects the trial and error of the design process. It is also part of a set of prototype parts for the Baton.
Physical Description
Lens prototype for Queen's Baton. Highly reflective plastic curved into a half cylinder.
