Summary

Insignia of the Order of the Crown of Italy medal awarded to Frederick McCoy in the 1890s. Dublin born palaeontologist Frederick McCoy came to Melbourne in 1854 as Professor of Natural Science at the University of Melbourne. McCoy lectured on biology, palaeontology, geology and botany. He cemented his reputation as a scientist and museum builder, becoming director of the National Museum in 1858, state palaeontologist and President of the Royal Society of Victoria.

Obverse Description

Gilt cross in white enamel with curved edges featuring 'Savoy knots' between the arms of the cross. Central blue enamel disc bears the Iron Crown of Lombardy in gold.
