Fur felt slouch hat with Light Horse emu feather plume and pugaree; without badge. The presence of the feather distinguishes the hat as Australian Light Horse.
Belonged to Corporal Herbert John Hutchinson, service number 1484, 4th Australian Light Horse regiment. Hutchinson was 20 and a grocer's assistant when he enlisted, and embarked on 29 October 1915, little more than one month after he enlisted, on the HMAT Palermo. He servied in Egypt at places including Heliopolis (now a suburb of Cairo with a war cemetery), Moascar (North Egypt), Ferry Post and Abou Matamir. He was considered to still be in good health when he returned to Australia in June 1919.
Physical Description
Fur felt slouch hat with Light Horse emu feather plume and pugaree (scarf around brim of hat); without badge. Wide brim turned up at proper left side, within which feather is secured. Leather internal band, leather chin strap.
