Khaki cord riding breeches First World War. Belonged to L/Cpl. H.J. Hutchinson 4th Light Horse.

Corporal Herbert John Hutchinson, service number 1484, was 20 and a grocer's assistant when he enlisted, and embarked on 29 October 1915, little more than one month after he enlisted, on the HMAT Palermo. He servied in Egypt at places including Heliopolis (now a suburb of Cairo with a war cemetery), Moascar (North Egypt), Ferry Post and Abou Matamir. He was considered to still be in good health when he returned to Australia in June 1919.

Physical Description

Khaki wool cavalry twill riding breeches. (L/CPL HJ Hutchinson). Diagonal slot pockets below waist to side seam. Side seam is slightly forward at the waist curving round to the centre front at knee, below knee is laced with cotton laces and metal eyelets, lower leg is shaped to fit tight. Bottom of lower leg has cotton binding, inside knee has protective pads of khaki suede chevron stitched. Fly has 6 buttons, belt loop on either side of front and back, no separate waistband, top of the trouser is lined at the waist with cotton and stitched to appear as a waistband. Two buttons on either side of the front and one on either side of the centre back to hold braces, Back seam is double stitched as is the seam above the knee.
