Princes Hill Secondary College was established in 1889 and is one of the oldest continuously operating schools in Victoria. The school serves the inner-city Melbourne suburbs centered on Carlton North and is located within an educational hub that includes the Melbourne Museum, the Melbourne Zoo, and the University of Melbourne.

In 1988 and 1989, the school participated in the Sunrise School educational computing research and development project - a joint venture between the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and the Museum of Victoria. The Sunrise School was a technology-rich learning space within the Museum of Victoria which selected teachers and students from Princes Hill Secondary College visited two afternoons per week to engage with computers and robotics equipment. The Sunrise Collection at Melbourne Museum contains a range of items related to the Sunrise School program.
