Insignia of the Order of St Michael and St George, a British order of chivalry founded in 1818 was originally awarded to those holding commands or high position in the Mediterranean territories acquired in the Napoleonic Wars, and subsequently extended to holders of similar office or position in other territories of the British Empire.
Both a star shaped medal and a badge were awarded.
Frederick McCoy was appointed to the Order Knight Commander (KCMG) in 1891 thus also receiving the title, Sir. The Order comprises a Star (worn on the left lapel) and a Badge (suspended on a blue-crimson-blue ribbon around the neck).
