Summary

Photograph of Private John Peile, service number 2662, 2nd Battalion, AIF, taken in a Sydney studio after he had enlisted on 25 June 1915 but before he sailed on 9 August 1915 on the A54 'Runic'.

John Peile was born in Echuca, Victoria. He was a 38-year-old unmarried miner when he enlisted. He served in in Gallipoli and France and was promoted to corporal. He died in France on 18 September 1918 and is buried at Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

His younger brother Albert enlisted first, as a 22 year old unmarried clerk, on 27 August 1914, service number 769, 3rd Battalion. He served in Gallipoli and later France, and was eventually promoted to the rank of corporal. Albert died in Bullecourt, France on 4 May 1917 and is commemorated at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. Their mother Mary Peile died in 1926, aged 73.

The photograph was taken at The Crown Studios, Sydney. John enlisted in Newcastle, New South Wales, and left Sydney on the HMAT Runic on 9 August 1915. Albert enlisted in Kensington, New South Wales, and left Sydney on the HMAT Euripides on 20 October 1914.
