Summary
Cardboard box of 'Austral' lantern plates, made by Kodak (Australasia) Pty Ltd, Melbourne, Australia. The box originally contained part of a collection of 55 photographic lantern slides, glass negatives and acetate negatives of travel images taken in the Pacific Islands, probably in the late 1930s.
The box is inscribed with the name 'Dr Lewis'. Another box in this set (HT 28172) is labelled with a University of Melbourne Department of Dental Science sticker and inscribed with the name 'Wm C Knight'. A William C. Knight was elected president of the Victorian branch of the Australian Dental Association in 1942. The Dr Lewis may therefore be Dr J. Monahan Lewis, who was practicing as a dentist from at least 1916, and by 1926 was president of the Melbourne University Dental Students' Society. In 1931 The Argus noted that he had been a Collins Street dental specialist for many years and was running for the Melbourne City Council. In 1939 he railed against conditions at the dental school at the University of Melbourne in the Advocate (Burnie, Tasmania) on 22 August 1939.
The name 'Hunter' is also written on the box. The source of the name remains unknown.
