Summary

Hand-drawn sketch of the Message Button from the Melbourne 2006 Queen's Baton. This drawing shows the early documentation of the concept for the button's appearance. The 'Message Button' was placed in the Queen's Baton by Queen Elizabeth II on 14 March 2005, at the start of the Queen's Baton Relay leading up to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Charlwood Design, the company that created the Baton and the Message Button, conceived of the Baton as a 'technology baton', and part of their concept was that the Queen's message would be digitally encoded and stored within the baton. In previous batons, such as the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games Baton, the message was written on a piece of paper which was then placed inside the Baton.

Physical Description

White A4 sheet of paper with three green pencil (one also includes black ink) drawings. The drawings give three different views of a round object. The right hand image, by far the most detailed, includes a rough version of the logo of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
