Description of the Sunshine Harvester Works' Printing Department.
Year established: 1910-1911
The Sunshine Harvester Works' Printing Department produced the company's marketing material, including product catalogues, brochures, calendars, Sunshine Review newsletters, parts and sales books and company stationary such as letterheads, envelopes and memo pads. The firm's time and production cards were also created by the department. Much of this marketing material is held in Museum Victoria's H.V McKay Sunshine Collection.
The department's output was immense. In 1950 alone, printing staff produced 120,000 calendars for the company's 800 sales agents across the country.
Employees in this department included a foreman, typesetters, engravers, compositors and printing machine operators. Other print-room staff collated and prepared material for printing and delivery. Noted employees included foremen Bob Dunlop and Eric Leheny who worked in the department in the 1950s and 1960s, respectively. Compositor Frank Barnes and machine operator Bill Watson were also part of the printing team in the 1940s. In addition, Sylvia Keeble was one of department's longest-serving staff members. She began as a junior printer in 1923 and stayed with the department until her retirement in 1965.
The department was situated in the company's Head Office on Devonshire Road, Sunshine. It was located the near the Photography Department.
