Summary
This letter of sympathy was one of a large number sent to his trainer and part owner Harry Telford after Phar Lap died in April, 1932. The Telford family retained the letters, and they were donated to the museum in the 1990s.

Telford,/C/o Victoria Racing Club,/MELBOURNE./Dear Mr. Telford,/I am directed by my Committee to convey/to you and your co-partner their sincere regret on/heariing of the death of your worl-famous horse "Phar/Lap"./I can assure you that every citizen of/Christchurch, and the people of Canterbury, where he/was born and bred, were deeply interested in your famous/horse's career, and the news of his death came as a very/great shock to them all. The name of "Phar Lap"/became a household word to the residents, and I may say,/to the whole of the Dominion, and we were awaiting the/time when the news would be forwarded that your famous/horse would stand paramount as the largest stake-winner/in the world. This achievement was well within grasp at/the time of his death.
