Summary

This letter of sympathy was one of a large number sent to his trainer and part owner Harry Telford after Phar Lap died in April, 1932. The Telford family retained the letters, and they were donated to the museum in the 1990s.

    Text: Dear Mr & Mrs Telford and Family/I am writing to you on behalf of Mr. Neville/myself and our daughters as we all loved dear old/Phar Lap his death came a great blow to our/household and we greatly sympathise with you on the/death of such a wonder horse there will never be another/like him we never got tired of reading or hearing about/him we have a wireless anad when ever he was racing and/won Ithink we were all as excited as you would be/We were all sorry when we heard he was going to/America My husband said it would be the end of him/if he went away over there, he seemed to think he/would never come back once he left Australia and/I think hundreds had the same thought./His win over there was great to think he beat/some of America best/My youngest daughter has a great collection of photos/and snapshot of Phar Lap which she is keeping so that/when her young nephew grow up she can tell them all/about him, she has a nice coloured one out of the/Australasia that she is going to fram for her daddy/but she would very much love to have a phot of your/little boy with Phar Lap and also one with/yourself with Phar Lap to complete her album that/she is putting the snaps in she has cut out every one/that she seen in the paper but she said she would very/like one of your little boy and yourself if it is possible/We also feel very sorry for Mr. Woodcock, Mr. Pike, and/Mr. Elliott it must have been a dreadful blow to/them, we can just picture you all in losing such/a dear old horse I saw a picture of him at the/Regent Theatre tody leaving for America it was/terrible to think we will not hear of see him race/again it was such a shock to our Father as though/it was one of his own animals as he is such a lover of/horses he always said it was something woth listening/to but now there wont be anything interesting in it/now/My daughter has just arrived home with one/of his photos in a frame and it looks wonderful./Please accept our greates sympathy/in your great loss.
