Summary

This letter of sympathy was one of a large number sent to his trainer and part owner Harry Telford after Phar Lap died in April, 1932. The Telford family retained the letters, and they were donated to the museum in the 1990s.

    Text: Mr. Telford/Dear Sir/Please find enclosed copy/of song in which the words/I composed the day we/got the News about Phar Lap./Also please except my Deepest/Sympathy & I hope you/will like the song the/tune is to the first verse/of the (wearing of the Green)/I heard the song was/sung on 3B.P. last Sat-night/so I interviewed them &/told them not to use/the song until further/notice as I hold the/copywright of the words/I have had many/congratulations already/of the song. I would like/to have a personal chat/with you as soon as con-/venient regards making/a short film. There should/be money to be made in/this direction. I did feel sorry/when I heard the News abut/Phar Lap & no doubt you/will feel it loosisng such/a valuable horse. You/will find there is nothing/harsh about the song & I heard/there has been a few attempts/already to copy my song./They have even gone as far/as using the same tune./There should be a lot of money/in making records etc./However Mr. Telford I will wait/a reply from you. I must/have some assistance/& an early reply should/you be interested.
